The Dordogne region takes its name from the beautiful river which runs through the heart of rolling green hills, dramatically perched castles, pretty towns and villages steeped in history. This is a region beloved by tourists for many years – and with good reason. It’s warm, welcoming and a perfect place to meander around and indulge in. A decidedly high quality area! The narrow streets and bustling market of Sarlat are top of many lists, but more dramatic is the village of La Roque-Gageac, with its troglodyte fort set in the cliffs above the river, or Beynac or Domme with their bird’s eye views of the river below. The tributary Vézère valley is home to the famous Lascaux cave paintings and other impressive pre-historic sites. A Holiday in the Dordogne wouldn’t be complete without a boat or canoe trip down the Dordogne or Vézère rivers with a picnic, and there are miles of marked walking trails to enjoy. But for many the best way to enjoy the Dordogne is from a restaurant terrace enjoying the region’s renowned cuisine and local wines.
